What is the Whitelion Three Peaks Challenge?

The Three Peaks Challenge is designed to test your resilience and perseverance. Over two days—33 hours to be exact—you’ll summit three of your states tallest mountains. Sure, we walk—but it’s no walk in the park.
Once you become a challenger, you not only commit to climbing three mountains—you also commit to raising money for at-risk youth. All the funds raised in the lead-up to the Three Peaks Challenge will be donated to Whitelion, a community charity committed to opening doors for disadvantaged young people.

Is the Three Peaks Challenge a timed event?

Our aim is for all participants to complete all peaks within 33 hours, but it is not a timed event. All challengers pledge to ensure all climbers complete the Three Peaks Challenge to the best of their ability.

How much does it cost to enter?

Registration costs $295 include training, expert guided hikes, food and beverages. Due to Covid Restrictions VIC participants need to organise transport to and from the event.

Once you register, you’ll also commit to raising a minimum of $1,250 for Whitelion. All donations are tax-deductible, and we encourage you to approach your company to contribute by matching what you are able to fundraise. Any amount not raised to this total, is pledged by the participant to make up the difference.

What’s included in the registration fee?

The $295 registration fee covers your,  meals, snacks and water, training sessions, and guiding & support crew.

I don’t live in either Melbourne or Sydney, can I still participate?

Yes! If there are places available in either event you are welcome to join by getting yourself to and from the point of origin of your choice. Contact the Whitelion Events Team on events@whitelion.asn.au for more information.

When can I register?

Registration is open until sold out.

If registrations are closed, can I still register someone to join me?

Unfortunately, when the event is sold out, it’s sold out. However, please do get them to email the Whitelion Events Team at events@whitelion.asn.au and we can add them to our waitlist should another challenger have to withdraw from the event.

How do I login to My Three Peaks Challenge?

Everyone who has registered for the Whitelion Three Peaks Challenge has an account created for them. On completion of your registration you should have received an email with these details.

Do I need to train for this event?

The short answer is Yes. To prepare for the Three Peaks Challenge, you’ll need to be in peak condition. Sure, it’s only walking, but walking to the top of Australia’s tallest mountains is no walk in the park.

Your goal is to climb 52 kilometres of steep terrain while helping your fellow climbers make the distance. And to do that, you’ll need to train. Nearly every week from December there will be free training sessions around both Melbourne and Sydney, including 1-2 night training sessions.

It is mandatory to attend at least 2 day training walks, and 1 night training walk. This will be monitored by the guiding crew and event staff.

What happens in the event of bad weather or another unexpected event?

We plan to persevere through, irrespective of rain, however, our guides will monitor conditions closely and if they feel at any time during the event it would be unsafe to proceed the event may be cancelled. No refunds will be provided in this unlikely event. This hasn’t happened at a Three Peaks Challenge to date.

I took some great photos, what should I do with them?

Fabulous! We’d love you to get in touch with us at events@whitelion.asn.au and we can send you a link to upload them for us. We’re always looking for great images for our website and social media. You can also tag us #WLTPC20

Is this event Covid Safe?

Yes! Whitelion Event Managers, Guides and Staff have been working hard to ensure that the event is Covid Safe and in line with all government recommendations and restrictions.

Why is the Three Peaks Challenge event being reimagined in 2022?

In response to the ongoing impacts of the Omicron strain of Covid-19 in Victoria and New South Wales, Whitelion Youth’s flagship event- Three Peaks Challenge Vic and NSW has been reimagined to allow for reduced risk of coronavirus transmission.

Now in its 17th year Three Peaks Challenge is Whitelion Youth’s biggest fundraiser and we depend on fundraising to support the parts of our work not funded by government. The participant registration fees and fundraising for this event is critical to us continuing our work. We have decide to proceed with the event in a modified format that we are confident safeguards participants. This is only for 2022. We intend to revert to the traditional model in 2023.

Whilst we are disappointed we are not able to deliver Three Peaks Challenge event in its traditional format in 2022, we are so fortunate to have the expertise of our exceptional Lead Guides who are dedicated to ensuring we can reward your fundraising efforts with an epic physical challenge.

What is Whitelion’s COVID safe plan?

Event safeguarding against COVID-19 includes:

  • Ensuring participants are fully vaccinated

  • Providing hand sanitiser and masks

  • QR code check in

  • No group long distance bus travel in 2022

  • No shared accommodation in 2022

As at  January 2022, following the Government’s guidelines, the direction from both the Victorian and New South Wales Government Department of Health is that all registered participants, spectators, staff, and volunteers aged 12 years and 2 months will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to participate.

Whitelion Youth will continue to closely monitor the Government guidelines and update you accordingly.

Now that the event has changed, how challenging are the peaks in the revised event format?

The mountain peaks for the 2022 Three Peaks Challenge event have been hand picked by our Lead Guides.

Details for NSW are being finalised, however we can confirm the following for Victoria:

  • Peak one: 19km distance, 1 elevation

  • Peak two: 12.5km distance, 500m elevation

  • Peak three: 18km distance, 1.1 elevation.

Can I choose which weekend I do my Three Peaks Challenge or can I split it across the different weekends on offer?

It is recommended to choose one weekend where you can complete the three peaks across two consecutive days. The option of a second weekend gives anyone who is unwell, caring for a loved one, or in isolation due to COVID-19 the opportunity to complete the challenge on an alternative date.

For those hiking enthusiasts looking for the ultimate challenge, there is the option of completing all 6 hikes over the 2 weekends.

The registration fee has reduced from $495 to $295 in 2022, if I have already registered and paid the $495 what happens with the excess $200?

All monies raised through the Three Peaks Challenge event will help Whitelion Youth support young people at risk.

Therefore if you are in a position to donate the $200 which has already been paid towards your fundraising target of $1,250 that will be gratefully received by Whitelion Youth to help deliver its First Jobs Campaign - a critical initiative to bring attention to and find solutions for the huge barriers to work faced by youth at risk.

Please email events@whitelion.asn.au to arrange a time to discuss a refund if you wish to withdraw.
How does the money raised from this event help support Whitelion Youth?

All Three Peaks Challenge fundraising will help Whitelion Youth deliver its First Jobs Campaign - a critical initiative to bring attention to and find solutions for the huge  barriers to work faced by youth at risk.

Every dollar raised will help:

- get every suitable young person engaged with WhitelIon Youth a vocational assessment and professional resume

- create training packages for employers with practical tools for supporting young people at risk in the workplace

- developing a youth friendly employer accreditation system so workplaces can promote their readiness to employ young people

- establishing a safe work experience system

- helping Whitelion staff and volunteers learn new skills to help young people with practical steps towards work that are often overlooked such as getting a drivers licence, developing communication skills, financial literacy and more.

Is all catering included in this years event?

Yes. All catering will be provided for participants across all of the hikes and will include:

scroggin (hiking snacks and trail mix), drinks, snacks, lunches and immersion event catering.

Am I required to make my own way to and from each hike across the weekend?

Yes.

For Victoria, we are working with our wonderful partners Crown Coaches  to explore the possibility of bus pick up points across the metro region.  All bus travel will adhere to strict COVID safe protocols including reduced capacity, short distance, masks and special air filter. More information will be provided in due course.

Why is accommodation not included in this years Three Peaks Challenge event?

To ensure this event is a COVD safe run event, Whitelion Youth will not be providing accommodation for the 2022 event. Further, extending accommodation options to allow for
COVID safe rooms for participants is simply not a financially feasible option as it would double our costs (in the traditional event model rooms are shared by participants - two to a room).

Therefore there will not be any overnight component included as part of the official 2022 Three Peaks Challenge events. No accommodation is required by the participant to be involved in this event as it has been designed for day travel less than 2 hours from CBD. However participants may wish to organise their own overnight accommodation in between the event days if they wish to do so. Whitelion Youth can provide accommodation options- please email here for more information.

What happens if we go into another enforced lockdown?

In the event that there are public health restrictions imposed on public events  which may cause cancellation of the event we will then revert to a virtual format of the event which we are working on as a contingency.  Registered event participants will be kept abreast of all changes in a timely manner.
